Chennai Super Kings (CSK) History
The first season of the CSK in 2008 saw the team win their way through matches until earning a spot in the Champions League T20 (that had to be cancelled). Unluckily, in 2009 they lost the match against the Royal Challengers which would’ve earned them entry to the finals for the second time.
In 2010, the Super Kings won the IPL tournament, then qualified for the 2010 Champions League Twenty20, and won that as well. They were suspended in 2015 but made a killer comeback in 2018 when they became champions once again.

CSK Team Identity
The Chennai Super Kings owe their identity to a combination of different cultural, social, and historical inspirations. This mash of ideas has mixed together so well that the brand is easy to recognize and eye-catching, with a lot of nuance to the meaning behind their symbols.
Team Style
The name of the Chennai Super Kings is heavily attributed to the Tamil Empire, which the team is meant to honor.
The word ‘super’ is commonly used in southern India, and there’s a deeply rooted inspiration in the ‘Kings’ as it’s derived from India Cements’ brand ‘Coromandel King’.
The lion was chosen as the main brand of the team because of its ferocious nature and its status as king of the jungle. This is thematically congruent with the name of the team and the golden outline that surrounds the orange roaring lion.
The jersey colors match the logo, using blue, orange, and yellow.
Team’s Theme Song
The popularity of the tune exploded during the 2009 cricket season and would later become the team’s theme song.
The video features folk dance employed in Tamil cinema and portrays the dance form of dappagutthy, a street dance common in certain communities of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai Super Kings Ban in 2015
A lot of people who were not in the loop a few years back might wonder why CSK was banned from the Premier League.
The Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals were suspended from the IPL for two years due to the alleged betting activities of their key officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra in the 2013 season.
Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested under the charges of spot fixing, which is where someone fixes certain aspects of the game in order to ensure a result in a proposition bet.
This was very bad news for the team and both officials were banned from being involved in cricket matches under the BCCI ever again.
It was for this reason that the CSK wasn’t able to participate in any games during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
