What Are Test Cricket Rules?

There are some peculiarities that make a Test cricket game different. And the rules have also been modified since the first cricket Test match in 1877.

  • A Test match is played over the maximum duration of five consecutive days. Each day comprises three playing sessions of two hours each, with breaks for lunch and tea.
  • A Test is a four-innings match, and usually, both teams bat and bowl for two innings each. After 80 overs of an innings, the captain of the fielding side can ask for a new ball.
  • A Test innings can also end if the captain of the batting side chooses to declare. Other than wins, losses, and ties, Tests can also end in draws if no conclusion is reached and the time for play runs out.
  • Team A can change the order of batting innings and enforce a follow-on if their first innings total was 200 or more than Team B’s first innings.

The most recent edition of the Border–Gavaskar Trophy was held in 2024-25. In that series, Australia defeated India 3-1.

4. World Test Championship: The league competition to crown Test champions began on 1 August 2019.
