Cricket Career
Domestic Career
Rohit Sharma made his domestic debut for West Zone in March 2005 when he competed against Central Zone in the Deodhar Trophy.
While facing North Zone in the tournament, Sharma achieved an unbeaten inning with an individual score of 142 against 123 balls with an imposing strike rate.
His impressive performance earned him an opportunity to represent India A.
He debuted for India A in July 2006 in a first-class match at Darwin against New Zealand.
Later that year, Sharma made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai and was a member of the championship Mumbai team.
He’s been on the roster for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team for the entirety of his domestic career.
Rohit attained captaincy for the 2013-2014 season after Ajith Agarkar retired.
IPL Career
Rohit Sharma has enjoyed perhaps the most successful IPL career out of any player in the league’s 13-year history. He also became an idol for millions of cricket fans around India, and therefore his quotes, images, and results were spread through social media, blogs, news, and different funny IPL jokes selections.
He debuted at the inception of the T20 league in 2008.
His first team in the Indian premier league was the Deccan Chargers franchise.
He was selected as a batsman, but he proved more than capable as a bowler when he took a hat-trick against the Mumbai Indians.
Sharma must have left a mark on the Mumbai Indians’ ownership as he went on to sign with the franchise in the next IPL auction. He’s been with them ever since. As one of the strongest players on the team, Rohit increases the chances of Mumbai Indians winning the IPL. IPL odds are updating and can be checked on Parimatch anytime!
He’s gone on to win five championships with his current team as the captain. He previously won a championship with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers — he has six IPL trophies in total.
As of 2023, the Hitman has scored 6211 runs in his IPL career and is the fourth-highest run-scorer in the league’s history.
ODI Career
In 2007 Rohit Sharma made his international debut for India against Ireland in a one-day match.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to bat since he was number seven in the order during India’s nine-wicket victory.
Early in Sharma’s international career, he was in and out of the lineup for India. Eventually, in 2013, he opened for India at the ICC Champions Trophy, which turned out to be a huge success.
His partnership with Shikhar Dhawan was the second most successful opening partnership in the history of the Indian cricket team.
Sharma also plays well with Virat Kohli, as the pair have an average of over 65 in ODIs.
In 2014 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the right-handed batsman scored the highest individual score in an international match, registering a whopping 264 runs after 173 deliveries — a standing world record.
Sharma received the Golden Bat award for scoring more runs than any other player in the ICC World Cup 2019.
In November 2020, Sharma was nominated for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade award.
In July 2022, Sharma became the first Indian captain to lead their team to both T20I, and ODI series wins in England. He became the 3rd Indian captain to win an ODI series in England and the first since 2014.
Leading from the front, he took the Men in Blue into the finals of the 2023 edition of the World Cup. He ended his campaign as the second-highest run-getter, sitting right after his fellow teammate, Virat Kohli. Rohit scored 597 runs at an average of more than 54.
Throughout the World Cup, the hitman provided the team with a blistering start, and things were no different in the ultimate match. In the finals, he scored a fast-paced 47 off 31. This helped India reach a total of 240.
Test Career
Rohit Sharma played in his first test match in November 2013 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
He boasted a score of 177 in his first test match, which was good for the second-best ever in a debut cap from an Indian player — only Shikhar Dhawan’s score of 187 was better. In the next match, he scored another century.
Despite Sharma’s strong start to his test career, he was eventually dropped from the team due to inconsistent performances. However, he was selected for the 2018-2019 tour of Australia.
Sharma was a member of the first-ever Indian squad to win a three-match series against Australia on Australian soil. In the decisive final game of the three-match event, Sharma scored 68 runs.
Sharma was appointed captain of India’s Test team in February 2022, succeeding Virat Kohli, ahead of a two-match series against Sri Lanka. Sunil Gavaskar praised his leadership, and Chetan Sharma, India’s chairman of selectors, said: “We will groom future captains under him.”
Rohit Sharma’s first big ICC tournament as a Test captain was the WTC finals, where India faced Australia. The results didn’t go as expected, but being a runner-up two times in a row is still a remarkable achievement for the team in blue.
T20 International Career
Rohit Sharma played his first T20 international match at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and was a member of the World Cup championship team.
On 2 October 2015, ‘The Hitman’ recorded 106 runs and became only the second cricket player ever to score a century in every format of international competition.
In 2018, Sharma joined a short list of five players worldwide to score over 2,000 runs in T20I competition, along with fellow countryman Virat Kohli.
In November 2019, Sharma reached the milestone of playing in 99 T20 International matches for India when he participated in the first game of the series against Bangladesh. He played in 100 T20Is for India in the following game of the series, becoming the nation’s first male cricketer to do so.
In November 2020, Sharma was a candidate for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade award.
In July 2022, Sharma became the first skipper in T20I history to guide his team to 14 straight victories in international cricket. He guided India to the semi-finals of the World T20.
With T20 World Cup 2024 knocking at the door, the Indian team has already started curating the best squad for the big event. However, with the impact he has been making on and off the field, it won’t be surprising to see Rohit Sharma leading the pack for what could be “one last time in an ICC event.”

Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stand out as the top two players in Indian cricket, often sparking debates about who is the superior cricketer. Both players showcase impeccable techniques, albeit with different styles.
Virat Kohli possesses a more classic technique, effortlessly executing all traditional shots with finesse. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma adopts a robust approach, showcasing a unique style that works to his advantage.
The debate on who is the better cricketer often boils down to conduct, and in this aspect, Rohit Sharma holds the edge. Sharma consistently exudes a calm and controlled presence on the field, while Kohli has, on occasion, displayed moments of losing his temper.
When it comes to batting statistics, Virat Kohli takes the lead. Although Rohit Sharma boasts incredible career stats, Kohli’s numbers are comparable, achieved in fewer games.
Interestingly, the strike rates of both players are nearly identical across all formats, adding another layer to the ongoing comparison.
In the end, the debate between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remains subjective. Each cricket enthusiast has their own opinion on who holds the title of the better player.
