2020/21 EPL season lasted from the first kick on 12 September to the final whistle at the end of May 23rd. Manchester City has become this season’s champion.

What is EPL?

The English Premier League is the top tier league of the English football.

It is the most popular football league in the world in terms of global TV audiences, broadcasting to over 4 billion people worldwide. It is also No.1 by media interest, the number of fantasy football teams based around it, and last but not least, EPL betting.

The season typically runs from August to May. The team that finishes with the most points after 38 games becomes the Premier League champion.

Brief EPL History

Founded on 20 February 1992, 29 years ago, after the clubs competing in the English First Division broke away from the Football League.

The top division became the Barclays Premier League teams, the second division became Football League Division One, the third Football League Division Two, and the fourth Football League Division Three.

Premiership football began life as a 24 team league. This was reduced to 20 for the 1994-1995 season and has remained with the same number of teams competing ever since.

What is EPL Competition Format?

There are 20 teams that compete in the Premier League.

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position.

The two teams that finish in the second and the third place qualify for the most prestigious European club competition, the Champions League, in the following season, with the fourth place earning a spot in the Champions League qualification round.

How Many Matches are Played in the Premier League?

The Premier League consists of 20 teams who play each other twice throughout one season, once at home and once away, meaning each side plays 38 Premier League games per season.

What if There Is a Draw?

If the two EPL clubs are on the same number of points, another measurement is used to decide who comes out on top. This is called the goal difference.

Goal difference is the difference between how many goals a team has scored, and how many goals have been scored against them.

The number of goals scored against a team is subtracted from the number of goals it has scored itself. The bigger the goal difference the better.

This is why it is not just about winning. It is also really important that teams score as many goals as they can in their matches.

If two twins have the same number of points and the same goal difference, it will come down to have scored the most goals. If that is the same, the teams will be awarded the same position in the table.

What Happens if the Team Doesn’t Have Enough Points?

Just as the team with the most points becomes the winner of the Premier League, the teams with the least points find themselves at the bottom of the table.

At the end of each football season, three Premier League teams who haven’t done well enough will be dropped into the competition below, which is called the Championship. Is called being relegated.

They will be replaced by Championship teams who did really well that season, who will get to move up to the Premier League. This is called being promoted.

If a team is relegated, it will play in the competition below for the next season. It will have to spend that fighting to win promotion to get back up into the Premier League for the following year, which isn’t easy.

What Is the EPL Trophy?

The Premier League Trophy is the ultimate prize that all Premier League teams battle for over 38 matches.

The winners of the Premier League get to keep the trophy for a limited period of time after they win it and are expected to return it to the league at least three weeks before the end of a season.

The Premier League maintains two trophies — the genuine trophy (held by the reigning champions) and a spare replica. Two trophies are held for the purpose of making the award within minutes of the title being secured, in the event that on the final day of the season two clubs are still within reach of winning the League.

A total of six teams have been crowned Premier League Champions:

  • Manchester United (13 times Champions)
  • Chelsea (5)
  • Manchester City (5)
  • Arsenal (3)
  • Liverpool (1)
  • Leicester City (1)
  • Blackburn Rovers (1)

What Is EPL Playoffs?

The four teams that finish 3rd to 6th place in the Championship meet in a series of play-off matches to determine the final team that will be promoted into the Premier League.

The winner of the semi-finals is decided by the tie’s aggregate score after the two legs. Extra time and penalties may be carried out if the scores are level. Away goals do not count in the play-off semi-final matches.

The winner of the tie gains promotion to the league above the one they are currently in.

The Premier League is one of the most competitive divisions in elite-level football, with some of the biggest and richest teams in the world.

Unlike some of its counterparts across Europe, where one or two clubs are dominant, the Premier League features what has become popularly known as The Big Six.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham are considered the ‘big six’ in the Premier League football teams.

They are the most consistently successful clubs of the English Premier League.

Not only that, but they boast the biggest stadiums, broadest fanbases, and, as a result, the healthiest bank accounts. Here’s the number of top 6 finishes during the 2010s:
